Using Effects With Tube Amps

Mesa/Boogie Lone Star effects loop jacks
by Mark Starlin
If you are using a tube amplifier built after 1980, you probably have effects loop jacks on your amp. These jacks are placed after the preamp stages of your amp so that any noise from your effects units will not be amplified along with the guitar signal. This is a handy trick when using noisy analog effects. While it can result in a quieter signal, it also gives you a different sound than running your effects straight into the input jack of the amp. Here’s why:

When you run your effects through an effects loop, the effects are coloring the sound of the amplifier tone. This gives you more of a studio-type sound where effects are added during the mix. The effects are more noticeable. When you run the effects through the input jack of the amp, the opposite happens. The amplifier is now coloring the sound of the effects. This can be especially useful when using distortion effects. If you set a tube amp on a clean tone and run a distortion effect through the input jack, the preamp tubes color the effect and give it more of a “tube” sound.

If you have a multi-effects unit with a headphone jack, listen to a distortion effect using your headphones. The tone is often very sterile sounding or even harsh. Now run the effect through the input jack of your tube amp and listen closely to the difference. The effect becomes smoother and more tube-like.

Many of the current effects units on the market are fairly quiet. Some also have noise reduction built-in, so running them through the input jack is usually no problem, noise-wise. Try running your effects through the effects loop and then through the input jack and listen to the difference. Depending on the effect, the differences can subtle or quite noticeable. Neither way is better, just different. Give it a try.

Breaking the "Box" Barrier: Moving Seamlessly from One Position to the Next

Chad Johnson

Going beyond the pentatonic scale forms to open up the neck

So you’ve learned all your pentatonic scale forms, and you’ve got them all under your fingers. You can play several different licks in several different positions on the neck without having to think for twenty minutes to do it. What's left?

The true benefit in knowing all these forms is in the freedom it provides—freedom to move seamlessly from one position to the next without having to think about it. Have you ever stared at a player in awe as he spanned the entire neck in one lick? Well, in this lesson, you’re going to learn how to do just that. Before we jump in though, let’s make sure you’re solid on all the forms.

This lick incorporates all five forms of the A minor pentatonic scale in one non-stop lick. If you’ve fudged your way through any of the forms so far, it’s going to show now.

Here we see the same figure played with only one difference. The first phrase features a third-finger slide from A to C, while the second phrase features a first-finger slide from G to A. This is done to demonstrate that there are a number of ways to connect two scale forms together. Different situations, such as personal preference, ease of execution, or musical logic will dictate which one works best for you. Download Example Audio 2...

This example moves through one scale form each beat by way of slides until you reach your destination—one full octave above where you started. You’ll find slides invaluable when moving between different scale forms.Download Example Audio 3...

This example accomplishes this one-octave climb by way of shifts and strict alternate picking.

Here is an impressive "span the neck" lick that climbs from the A note on fret 5 of string 6 to the C note on fret 20 of string 1. Note the extensive use of slides. The trick here is to be able to stress the three-note groups as sixteenths instead of triplets.

Manipud vs. Bautista, AC 6943, March 13, 2009.

This is the case of Atty. Fil (not his true name), a lawyer who escapes punishment for fraudulent and deceitful acts that have been clearly established on record, merely because of technicality. Even if he looks guilty of casting doubt upon the integrity and dignity of the legal profession, no disciplinary action is imposed on him.

In 2003, a Deed of Real Estate Mortgage (REM) was executed covering a property registered in the name of Tita, the auntie of Fil, to secure a loan obtained from Fred, another lawyer. When the loan was not paid on time despite demands, Fred filed an application for extra-judicial foreclosure of said property with the Clerk of Court and Ex-Officio Sheriff of the Regional Trial Court (RTC). Thereafter, a Notice of Extrajudicial Sale was issued and public auction was scheduled on April 1, 2005.

Before the auction date however or on March 22, 2005, Fil filed with the RTC as counsel of the mortgagor Tita, a verified complaint for annulment of the REM and the Notice of Extrajudicial Sale with Prayer for a Writ of Preliminary Injunction and/or TRO. Initially a TRO was issued so the scheduled sale did not proceed. But on May 18, 2005, the RTC lifted the TRO and denied the prayer for a writ of preliminary injunction. Thus, upon another application for extrajudicial foreclosure filed by Fred, another Notice of Extrajudicial Sale was issued by the Sheriff setting the public auction on July 29, 2005.
However, on July 20, 2005, Fil filed another complaint for annulment of the same REM containing the same allegations, involving the same parties, the same subject matter, the same facts, the same issues and seeking the same relief. The fact of filing and the pendency of the first case were disclosed by Fil in paragraphs 18, 20, and 22 of the second complaint and in the Certificate of Non-Forum Shopping.

Nevertheless, on November 21, 2005, Fred filed a complaint for disbarment of his companero Fil for filing the two exactly similar complaints which constitutes forum shopping in violation of his attorney’s oath and of Canon 1, Rule 1.01 of the Code of Professional Responsibility, and for improper conduct. At the same time Fred also asked the RTC for the dismissal of the second complaint on the ground of forum shopping.

In response, Fil promptly withdrew the second complaint before the RTC and in his comment to the disbarment case, Fil alleged that he filed the second complaint as a desperate attempt to restrain the sale of his aunt’s property out of pity for her who was about to lose her family home due to the unconscionably high monthly interest being charged by Fred. Fil contended that he was not guilty of forum shopping because he did not act willfully, maliciously and with ill intent.

Fil contended that the institution of the second complaint was only in reaction to Fred’s second application for foreclosure which impressed upon his mind that it was another foreclosure. In fact Fil claimed that his prompt withdrawal of the second complaint was indicative of his good faith.

On October 3, 2006 however, Fred discovered for the first time that the mortgagor Tita who was Fil’s auntie had been dead since October 16, 1968. Despite this fact, Fil still notarized both the first and second complaints purportedly signed by his aunt who was by that time long dead.

So at the scheduled mandatory conference on March 29, 2007, Fred tried to raise this fact of death of the mortgagor in 1968 way before she supposedly mortgaged the property in 2003. Fred contended that since Tita was Fil’s auntie, he should know that Tita and the one who signed both complaints are two different persons because Tita was already dead by that time. Thus Fred alleged that Fil’s act of resurrecting a dead person, not once but twice demonstrates a character not befitting a member of the legal profession.

But Fil objected to the raising of these facts in his disbarment case on the ground that the only issue here is whether he violated the rule on forum shopping. The IB Investigating Commissioner agreed with Fil and just told Fred to point this out in his position paper. But when Fred raised this fact in his position paper, the Commissioner nevertheless resolved only the issue on forum shopping and found that Fil was not administratively because the filing of the second complaint was not done maliciously and willfully to commit forum shopping. Was the IBP commissioner correct?

Yes. According to the Supreme Court, Fred’s complaint merely charged Fil with commission of forum shopping in violation of his attorney’s oath and the Code of Professional Conduct, and for improper conduct. Fil’s act of allegedly resurrecting Tita from the dead and for allowing an impostor to impersonate the dead was never raised as an issue. Hence Fred could not raise the same at this last stage of the proceedings.

But is Fil’s act of resurrecting the dead and allowing an impostor to impersonate the dead not an “improper conduct” which is also one of the grounds of Fred’s complaint.

Drum machine with PCM sound sources
Realistic drum sounds derived from PCM sources are arranged in a variety of rhythm patterns for different musical genres. The 40 rhythm variations include the steady 8-beat of Rock and Pop, funky 16-beat, a "Jazzy" 4-beat, some great shuffle for Blues sessions, and many more choices. Rhythm training is a cinch, and tap input allows you to specify the tempo easily.
    Auto-chromatic tuner for guitar
The guitar tuner can be called up instantly by pushing the two foot switches together. High-brightness LED indicators make the note readout easy to see also on a dark stage. The possibility for mute tuning without sound output offers further convenience.

Thanks to its circuit design optimized for low voltage operation, the unit will run for 12 hours continuously on a set of four IEC R6 (size AA) batteries. The AC adaptor (AD-0006) can be plugged in for extended studio work, whereas on stage you never need to worry about AC power.
Expression pedal adds another dimension to your play
With the built-in expression pedal, you can control effect parameters in real time. Set the mood with wah, vary the pitch shift, or adjust the volume dynamics. Go beyond conventional pedal effects by varying drive gain or modulation rate, and adjusting the mixing ratio of delay and reverb. The choice is yours. Lamb of God

    Tips.
    Researched by: Roldan O. Roldan

Lamb of God is an American groove metal band from Richmond, Virginia. Formed in 1994, the group consists of vocalist Randy Blythe, guitarists Mark Morton andWillie Adler, bassist John Campbell, and drummer Chris Adler. The band is considered to be a member of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
Since its formation, Lamb of God has released six studio albums, one live album, and three DVDs. The band's cumulative sales equal almost two million in the United States. In 2007 the band received a Grammy nomination for their 2006 album Sacrament. Lamb of God has toured with the Ozzfest twice and appeared onSlayer's The Unholy Alliance Tour in 2006. They have also played at many other major festivals around the world including Download Festival and Sonisphere Festivalin the UKSoundwave Festival and Gigantour. Recently, (2008–2009) they have toured with Metallica (World Magnetic Tour). Lamb of God have also played Mayhem Festival this Summer.

Walk with Me in Hell and Wrath (2008–2009)

Randy Blythe at 2007's With Full Force.
On May 3, Lamb of God announced via MySpace their new DVDWalk with Me in Hell, would be released on July 1, 2008. The DVD is a double-disc and has nearly five hours of footage, containing the feature documentary Walk with Me in Hell and multiple live performance extras from the Sacrament World Tour. At the end of the Walk with Me in Hell documentary the members stated that they are excited more than ever to write new material. 'Walk With Me In Hell', the third DVD from Richmond, VA's metal icons LAMB OF GOD, has officially reached platinum status.
In August, 2008, it was announced, by studio producer Cole Higley, that the band had commenced work on the follow-up to Sacrament, and that its release was scheduled for February, 2009. Josh Wilbur was also named as the producer for the record. They will also be touring with Metallica as a direct support act starting in December 2008.
The recording process of the new record was made available to view online live through the band's website, with two webcams installed in the studio (specifically in the drum room and mixing room).
Their latest album is named Wrath and was released on February 23, 2009 internationally via Roadrunner Records and on February 24, 2009 in America via Epic Records. The album is dedicated to Mikey Bronsnan, who helped them get started in Philadelphia, PA. In November 2008, Bronsnan was killed by a drunk driver. According to drummer Chris Adler, "Without Mikey, we'd very well might not be a band today." Drummer Chris Adler was quoted saying "This album is going to surprise a lot of people. Typically bands that get to where we are in our career begin to slack off, smell the roses and regurgitate. We chose a different path. No one wants to hear another band member hyping a new record. ‘Wrath’ needs no hype. We have topped ourselves and on February 24 you will feel it." With that said, "Wrath" debuted on the Billboard 200 at number two, selling over 68,000 copies in its first week.
In support of Wrath, the band in spring of 2009 embarked on the first leg of their world tourNo Fear Energy Tour headlined by themselves with main support from Children of Bodom and As I Lay Dying, and rotating opening slots with God Forbid and Municipal Waste. The tour was a massive success for the band with rave reviews and large turnouts at each show. The band played in Europe in the summer to perform withMetallica on the World Magnetic Tour along with Mastodon, while also playing headlining shows of their own and performing at major European festivals. For the final six dates of the tour, Unearth's Buz McGrathfilled in for Mark Morton, as he left early to be with his wife and his first child.
Lamb of God has been announced to also serve as Metallica's direct support for the North American leg of their 2009 world tour, as well as finishing the year off by headlining shows in Australia and New Zealandwith Shadows Fall and DevilDriver. (Wikipedia)

    Question:  From Mackiel Garcia
Some tips on the tones of the "Lamb of God"

Each album has different shape tones and quite different from the others but latest ones sound really scooped and the noise gate up high and uses a On and Off switch in their Guitar to avoid unwanted notes or noise at the end of some riffs or music.

In the Guitar World Magazine, shows their setup for live rig and it even shows his settings on the amp. He uses mark IV and it has a total V shaped eq going on. He also has an MXR OD infront of it and also a wah and EVH phaser. 10 bass, 0 mids, and 10 treble like the Eq of Dime Bag of Pantera. However, in their album it sounds like they uses around 8 bass, 10 mids,  and 5 treble of value. (depending in your gear) both of them are used.

You can use this setting in your multi-effects, just keep it tight and avoid fuzz.

Alright, first off i am playing a ESP Eclipse 1000 w/ EMG's. And i have 2 EL34's in the middle and 2 6L6's on the outside. So on the lead channel your settings are:

    Lead Gain-7.5 & Pulled
    Lead Treble-8.5
    Lead Bass-5.5
    Lead Mid-4
    Lead Drive-9 & Pulled
    Lead Presence-6 & Pulled

And of course use the EQ and scoop it!

I stole these settings right off of Willie Adler's amp so if you got a JB in the bridge and his hands your dead on. BTW, Mark uses EL34's in one head and 6L6's in the other while Willie only uses ONE head w/ a combination of 6L6's and EL34's. Let me know how these work for you.
